Description

GM Part #12551163 is a multi-purpose OEM engine bolt used in General Motors LS-series V8 engines (1997-2014+). Its primary function is securing the valve lifter guide trays (or lifter buckets) in the engine block.

Thread Size: Metric M6 x 1.0 thread pitch

Length: 19 mm under-head length (UHL)

Head Type: 6-point hex head (requires a 10mm socket) with a built-in unthreaded shoulder

Placement: Engine valve lifter valley

Quantity Required: 4 bolts per engine (one for each of the four lifter guide trays)
Why it is used

Maintains Alignment: It locks the plastic lifter trays into place so the hydraulic lifters do not twist or rotate in their bores, which would cause catastrophic camshaft and engine failure. 

Safety Design: The unthreaded shoulder under the bolt head acts as a stop to prevent over-tightening. This ensures the bolt clamps the tray properly without cracking or deforming the plastic guide. 

Application: It is frequently used during engine rebuilds, camshaft swaps, or Displacement on Demand (DOD) deletion kits
