    2017 - 2022 Honda Accord

After installation, Mishimoto recommends checking the contents of the baffled catch can every 1,000 miles until a baseline is established. Oil blow-by accumulation will vary with ambient temperatures and driving conditions. It is important that the contents of the can do not rise above the internal baffle.

The 2018+ Honda Accord 1.5T is like a grown-up version of its sporty Si cousin. Equipped with a similar 1.5T, this big sedan knows how to get you where you need to go both quickly and comfortably. It soaks up the road rather than attacking it. While this Accord might be grown up, there are some things it can’t grow out of.

Blow-by is an issue that affects just about every internal combustion engine, including the 2018+ Honda Accord 1.5T. This murky fuel and oil mixture makes its way back through the intake system, coating the top end internals and lending itself to carbon buildup, ultimately robbing your Accord of both performance and efficiency.

Never fear, Mishimoto is here to reduce the risk of carbon buildup in the L15B7 with our direct-fit baffled oil catch can kit for the 1.5T Accord. This kit mounts one of our patent pending 3 oz. two-port catch cans in line with the engine’s PCV system and separates out oil and fuel vapors from the crankcase pressure, leaving it behind in the bottom of our can. To simplify the installation, our kit includes two pre-molded hoses, specifically designed for the Accord’s engine bay, along with a robust mounting bracket available in black or Rallye Red. As with all Mishimoto products, the 2018+ Honda Accord 1.5T Baffled Oil Catch Can Kit also includes the Mishimoto Lifetime Warranty.

    • Direct fit for the 2018+ Honda Accord 1.5T
    • Single can mounts in line with the PCV system to separate oil from air using a 50-micron bronze filter
    • Helps reduce carbon buildup on intake valves
    • Patented (US D884,760 S) billet 6061 aluminum sealed can sealed with Viton™ O-rings
    • Installs in under 30 minutes
    • Robust, application-specific bracket mounts the can in a serviceable location, available in wrinkle black or red
    • Includes pre-molded hoses for simplified installation
    • Integrated check valve prevents leaks by keeping boost pressure from reaching the catch can and crankcase.
    • Defends intake system and essential engine components from oil blow-by
    • CNC-machined aluminum barbed fittings ensure a sturdy connection between lines and can
    • Catch can has a 3 oz. capacity for longer servicing intervals
    • Internal air diverter increases air turbulence to improve oil separation
    • Helps maintain proper octane levels to reduce potential detonation
    • Filter and can are fully serviceable
    • Mishimoto Lifetime Warranty

SHARED HEARTBURN – DIRECT FIT CATCH CAN R&D, PART 1 – CONCEPT AND DESIGN

With the K20C4 replacing Honda’s V6 Accord option, they still needed something to fill the gap between that and the mild Hybrid. Enter the L15B7. The 1.5T variant is powered by almost the same engine found in the Civic. Granted, there were a few adjustments needed. For instance, this 1.5T has less aggressive tuning and uses a different intake system. This means that there’s enough power to contend with the extra weight, but not more than the Si. Since most of this engine is the same, that means there will be the same issue with blow-by.

Given our familiarity with Honda’s turbocharged lineup, our engineer, Ye, knew exactly where to dive in with one of our compact catch cans. Much like how Honda was able to repurpose the 1.5T, Ye sought to mount this kit’s catch can using the bracket designed for the 2.0T.

The bracket design for the 2.0T kit does mount up to the 1.5T. Our main cause of concern was the proximity to one of the fuel lines. Even though it would be unlikely that it would cause an issue, we chose to be cautious.

Even though the L15B7 was the recipient of minor updates, that doesn’t mean there weren’t differences between the two Accords. We found that reusing the bracket design puts the can too close for comfort to one of the OEM lines. Given that we’re looking to protect your engine, Ye went back to the drawing board to make sure we wouldn’t cause any fuel leaks.

Luckily there was still plenty of space on the other side of this mounting location.

Luckily, with the smaller engine and the front-mounted turbo setup, there was still plenty of room to position the catch can against the firewall. Using the same mounting point, Ye worked up a new bracket clear from any OEM lines while still being plenty accessible for servicing.

While we might not have been able to share a bracket design between the Accords, we plan on sharing the same level of protection between the two variants. With our can installed, we sent our 1.5T powered Accord out for the standard 1000-mile road test to gauge the amount of collection and ensure the system works safely on the vehicle. Stay tuned for the results of just how much blow-by you can expect to see from your Accord.

SHARED HEARTBURN – DIRECT FIT CATCH CAN R&D, PART 2 – PRODUCTION SAMPLE AND TEST RESULTS

If you already read our last post, you’ll know that a cure for this ailment is underway. So far, we’ve designed our prototype kit and set our donor vehicle out for the Mishi equivalent of clinical trials, a 1000-mile road test. This cycle tests two perimeters for our solution. The first is to determine the bench line of how much blow-by we expect to collect, which then lets you know how often to empty the can. The other is to ensure that our kit operates safely on the vehicle without any pesky check engine lights. Let’s take a look at the final product, and make sure that you stick around for our results.

In the case that you want to add some extra zest to the engine bay, our catch can bracket is also available in Rallye Red.

In this new age of turbocharged Hondas, plenty of components are shared between the different models. As we went over in the last post, some things change slightly between the different trims, which meant that the 1.5T ended up with a specially designed bracket.

Even though the bracket is specific for the 1.5T, that doesn’t mean that we couldn’t borrow the mounting method from our other Honda catch can designs.
Since Honda utilized the compact but punchy 1.5T in this iteration of the Accord, routing lines and installation is a cinch. Our lines are also J30R7 spec compliant and feature a one-way check valve to keep your catch can from pressurizing.

Now for the question you’ve all been waiting for—does it actually work or is it just a placebo? Well, our results are in and in 1000 miles our direct-fit kit for the 1.5T powered Accord collected approximately 3-4 ml of blow-by. Granted, this pales in comparison to what we collected in the spicier 2.0T variant, but the constant peppering of the intake valves will eventually lead to the same result.

It might not look like much, but even this small amount of blow-by can cause the same effect on the intake valves.
