(I CAN’T GET NO) LOW OIL TEMPS – OIL COOLER R&D, PART 1: STOCK REVIEW

You got it! The oil in your 2016 Camaro SS.

That’s right, folks, you needn’t fret anymore; Mishimoto has tasked our engineers with making you and your oil much more comfortable by kicking off the development process for a snazzy new 2016 Camaro oil cooler!  Our company is full of enthusiasts, and we understand how frustrating the fear of overheating can be when you have to pass on autocross or cut off those last few runs at the strip. Let’s take a quick look at what we’ve got going on from the factory before delving into how we can help to cool you down with some of our own 2016 Camaro parts.

stock1
Stock 2016 Camaro parts

The stock 2016 Camaro oil cooler setup is limited to a single liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger that is bolted onto the side of the engine just in front of the oil filter. Oil flows through the exchanger, and two coolant lines (supply and return) provide a steady flow of coolant, into which some of that heat is transferred. This unit functions most prominently as a means of cooling the oil, but also works inversely upon startup and for a short duration thereafter to help warm the oil temperature when the coolant’s temperature exceeds it.

front1
2016 Camaro Oil cooler

In order to bolster your Camaro’s ability to cool down its oil, we are going to be incorporating a 25-row liquid-to-air heat exchanger; this will work by transferring some of that thermal energy out of your engine oil and into the ambient air flowing through the exchanger. Our plans utilize an M22 sandwich plate that will sit snugly between the LT1’s engine block and the oil filter, and we will also supply an M22 adapter (aka, a center bolt) to keep everything where it needs to be. From the sandwich plate, an output line will transport your too-hot-to-party oil to the exchanger in the front of the car, and a return line will bring it on home to your LT1, cooled down, and where it belongs. (My 25-year old BMW still hasn’t figured out that the driveway is NOT where the oil belongs.)

In the front of the car, the heat exchanger sits nicely mounted just below the bumper support. Our engineers have come up with some clever metal brackets that mount to preexisting bolts, meaning that you will not have to drill holes into any of your 2016 Camaro parts. The horn needs to be moved slightly, but don’t start honking at me on the forums just yet, because we will also be providing a bracket to make that accommodation a snap!

Next time …

So all of this sounds great, but these 2016 Camaro parts are no good if they don’t actually cool your oil. Our 2016 Camaro oil cooler is currently undergoing rigorous testing to ensure that it meets our high standards. Next time, we’ll go over our collected data, and I’ll give you some insight into how our testing process works.

GIMME SHELTER [FROM HIGH OIL TEMPS] – OIL COOLER R&D, PART 2: TESTING AND DATA ANALYSIS

What’s Included?

For those of you that may be unaware, we have been hard at work in developing a direct-fit 2016 Camaro oil cooler, and are nearing the end of the process. This is all well and good, but I want to give you all more detail on what we will be providing.

At Mishimoto, when we say something is “direct-fit”, we take that very seriously. We have designed a set of brackets and hoses that will allow one of our devout 25-row oil-to-air heat exchangers to bolt up to the front clip of your sixth-gen SS flawlessly and with ease, but without inhibiting the functioning of any factory 2016 Camaro parts whatsoever. The kit will tap into the factory oil system utilizing an M22 sandwich plate between the oil filter and the engine block, and will be available in silver or black, and thermostatic or non-thermostatic options.

Wait, Thermo-what?

Thermostatic kits incorporate a thermostat into the sandwich plate that opens when the oil temperature reaches 185 degrees Fahrenheit (or ~82 degrees Celsius), allowing hot oil to flow to our 2016 Camaro oil cooler, which significantly lowers those temperatures and returns the oil to the sandwich plate. Once the overall temps drop back to optimal levels, the thermostat closes and keeps the oil isolated within the factory system, until it gets hot enough again to warrant another trip to the front bumper for some more chill time. The thermostatic 2016 Camaro parts are ideal for the ultimate daily driver, offering a great compromise between performance cooling and daily-driven practicality.

For those of you whose cars see primarily high-performance conditions, it might make sense to cut out the middle-man and keep that stuff flowing through the cooler at all times – for these conditions, the non-thermostatic 2016 Camaro oil cooler generally makes more sense.

Now that we know what we’re working with, let’s take a peek at some renderings of those brackets so you can see how the kit will bolt up to your other 2016 Camaro parts!

Testing Process

Now I’m a very skeptical person myself, and I really love solid data and information to back up seemingly wild claims (for this reason, I tend to avoid major news networks during election season). One of the things I love about working for Mishimoto is that we as a company share those values – data are the number one driver in our development process, and we will not settle for a product that does not perform to our high standards – 2016 Camaro parts are no exception.

In testing our 2016 Camaro oil cooler, consistency is key. We perform a variety of tests in numerous environments – this particular cooler has been dyno-tested at length, and also was put through its paces on the street to dial in the real-world conditions that heat exchanger will see. Additionally, we perform all of our testing using the non-thermostatic oil cooler kit. This ensures that we adequately capture the actual cooling effect of the heat exchanger itself, without clouding the results with the effects of the thermostat opening and closing.

The Data

These data don’t lie! Check out the testing results of our 2016 Camaro oil cooler, below.

2016 Camaro Parts – Temperature

As you can see, the Mishimoto 2016 Camaro oil cooler has a significant impact on oil temperatures as compared to factory conditions. One concern that comes with lowered temps, however, is that they tend to come with lower pressure as well (PV=nRT, #amirite?). Well due to the clever internal routing of the oil within our system, our engineers have been able to keep that pressure well within acceptable limits, and very close to OEM spec.

IT’S ONLY COOL’N’ OIL (BUT YOUR SS LIKES IT) – OIL COOLER R&D, PART 3: PRE-SALE

It’s pretty safe to say there’s not a whole lot that your Camaro likes about this weather. The joy of being on the road notwithstanding, this persistent heat does not otherwise make your car very happy. However, we want your Camaro to enjoy what’s left of summer; that’s why we have recently released a Mishimoto 2016 Camaro oil cooler for your SS, and the discounted pre-sale continues!

The lines run from the sandwich plate, up the side of the engine bay, and then to the heat exchanger in front of the radiator. They fit perfectly and provide a high level of durability and resilience, while looking great at the same time.

Next, we routed the lines from the plate to the front of the car.
