In slowing the oil's return, air that has been suspended in the oil is allowed more time to separate from the oil.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003e\n\u003cspan\u003eRemoving the air both improves the ability of the oil to transfer heat and reduces pressure drops at high RPM.  The plate is sandwiched between the engine and the oil pan.
