Stock Downpipe vs. N55 Catless Downpipe The stock downpipe on the BMW N55 engine places a restrictive catalytic converter directly behind the turbocharger. While necessary for emissions, this design increases backpressure, slows turbo spool, and limits the true performance potential of the 135i and 335i. Upgrading to a high-flow catless downpipe removes this restriction and lets the turbo operate more efficiently, unlocking noticeable gains in responsiveness and power.
