Air-to-water intercooling is the future for forced induction vehicles, so it's no surprise when the BMW and Toyota tag-team integrated their system directly into the intake manifold for these new aged sports cars. This might maximize the cooling efficiency of the B58, but there are still some shortcomings, especially when it comes to the A90 and G29's heat exchanger. Luckily, we here at Mishimoto have the solution.

We started from the ground up with our design, starting by ditching all plastic bits, replacing the end tanks, core, and inlet/outlet ports with a durable aluminum TIG-welded for maximum durability. We also opted to utilize strutted tubes within our heat exchanger core to add even more strength, ensuring an added resistance against bowing and flexing under hard cornering. To help protect the heat exchanger from debris at high speed, we’ve also included a galvanized steel stone guard.

There's more to our design than strength as well. In addition to our durability features, we also expanded our heat exchanger's size, adding 31% in core volume and 48% to the external fin surface area. Combined with our dual-pass flow configuration and louvered fin design, we were able to record a 5-7°F drop in intake air temperatures, along with a more consistent global intercooler coolant temperature.

The Mishimoto Performance Heat Exchanger for the 2020+ Toyota GR Supra and 2019+ BMW Z4 3.0L is available in a natural finish That is, in stock form, at least. We all know that the Supra is a tuner’s dream, so plenty will inevitably see some means of increased power by way of a tune, turbo, or a combination of the two, where the stock heat exchanger just won’t cut it. To further ease the future installation of this heat exchanger, Jason did retain some of the OEM design features. Specifically, with the data collected from the scan arm, our heat exchanger design will feature both precisely positioned mounting tabs, and reuse the same quick disconnect fittings for the inlet and outlet for seamless integration with the factory lines. opted for the addition of strutted tubes. Under hard driving conditions, the front cooling stack can twist and flex as the vehicle enters and exits tight corners. The forces acting on the core of the heat exchanger can potentially cause leaks down the line. However, by adding struts in the core, we’ve increased the strength of the Supra’s heat exchanger core, and significantly reduced the risk of coolant leaks in the future.

The end tanks have received a full overhaul as well in the name of longevity by ditching the crimped on plastic in favor of full aluminum, TIG-welded to the core. Sensors were placed throughout the various systems to monitor specifically coolant, along with intake air temperatures.

With the testing complete, our data review showed an average reduction in the global intercooler coolant temperatures. You can see that with our heat exchanger installed, both the inlet and outlet temperatures trend lower than the stock unit. As a refresher, the intercooler under the hood of the A90 Supra is an air-to-water system, meaning that it utilizes a separate coolant system to transfer heat from the intake air. So, by lowering the average coolant temperature in that system, we would expect to see a reduction in the intake air temperatures.

Expectations met. With our heat exchanger installed and coolant temperature dropped, the intercooler was able to pull more heat from the charged air. Specifically, we noted a 7°F drop from our intake manifold mounted sensor. When it comes to adding power to any vehicle, every bit counts. A 7°F drop in intake temperatures might sound like a marginal gain, but cooler air is denser. The more cool and dense the air is, even by a few degrees, the more power that’s crammed into the engine. Not to mention that improvements in intake air temperatures are vital when also incorporating bigger turbos or tunes with your build.

With the testing complete and the data compiled, we have scientifically determined that our heat exchanger can, in fact, walk the walk.
